Melting Winter Blues in the Sun

Verse of the day: Romans 8:28

It’s March and finally Spring is on the horizon. After the winter we have had here, I am much ready for some warmer weather. Winter is hard for most of us to get through. As a gardener, I loathe the time my garden dies, even though it’s part of the yearly cycle.

Winter is a time of rest from all the hustle and bustle of the year/growing season. We get 3 months of rest. Winter gives us time to recoup and plan for the next year. This is the time of year I reflect the most, whether it’s on life, the garden, work, etc. One of the most rewarding things to me is harvesting the last of the summer garden right before the first hard freeze and looking at everything I grew that year. For example, last year was the best year I’ve ever had with peppers!

Getting through winter should come with a plan and embracing the change of pace. Find activities that make you happy. What type of activities do you do in the winter. I look forward to watching hockey (Go Penguins) which starts usually the very end of September (preseason) and goes to April for the regular season. May is the play-offs and then June is the Stanley Cup. Another thing I look forward to in the winter is Christmas! My house looks like Christmas threw up everywhere for the whole holiday season. After the holidays pass, I start looking into garden stuff and eager to get started. I live in zone 6b, I won’t be able to put anything outside until mid-May. About this time is the best time for me to start seed starting and still sticking to watching hockey.

Embrace the changing of the seasons. Our bodies need a rest, and winter is the best time to do that. Life is not meant to be rushed, and colder seasons force us to slow down more than throughout the rest of the year. All of us are guilty of constantly on the go. Embracing a slower season is also good for a mental recharge. Without a mental recharge, it can lead to anxiety, fatigue, depression, and overall, just feeling extremely burnt out. Look at spring as a new beginning in a way. Yes, the new year starts on January 1st, but spring shows more signs of life and a start to a new year. The grass is greener, flowers start to bloom, and the birds come back once again. All a process of life each year. Winter blues are almost up, embrace the little that is left and let’s get ready for all the craziness to start.

God Bless!
